Robert H. Hyman

Robert Hyman is a Composer, Lyricist, Musical Director and Performer. 

Since reaching the finals of the Vivian Ellis Awards, he has been the principal composer at Theatre Royal Stratford East for over 27 years, writing music and lyrics for 20 of their original pantomimes including Cinderella (which was Olivier-nominated), Rapunzel which won him a Great British Pantomime award, Robin Hood, Pinocchio, Aladdin, Red Riding Hood & Dick Whittington (all with Trish Cooke); Red Riding Hood and Dick Whittington (with Patrick Prior), Cinderella (with Leo Butler), Jack and the Beanstalk (with Anna Jordan) and is currently working on Robin Hood and the Merry Mandem with Yolanda Mercy. 

Other Stratford commissions include scores for 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea and Make Some Noise and most recently Joan -The Musical written for the theatre’s 140th anniversary about the life, loves and turmoil of Joan Littlewood, the maverick director who put Stratford East on the theatrical map. 

He was also Musical Director for the hit musicals The Big Life (both at Stratford East and in the West End) and Come Dancing written by and staring Ray Davies of the Kinks.

Other projects include conducting a choir of 5000 at the O2; Musical Director for the inaugural performance of the World Children’s Ensemble at the Royal Albert Hall involving young people from 37 different countries; and songs/lyrics for Image Musical Theatre Company for whom he has written 24 musical scores of famous classics including Tess of the D’Urbervilles, Vanity Fair, The Jungle Book and Wind in the Willows.

Other commissions include songs for the CBeebies series – Boogie Beebies, Hackback (The Computer Musical) published by I.M.P. and which received worldwide performances and several Youth theatre shows for various companies around the country. 

Currently he has been helping young songwriters create songs for Arbor day in his home town of Letchworth and conducts their 80 strong community choir Letchworth City Chorus. He also creates all the arrangements and musically directs for Theatretrain for the last 34 years.
